When TARP ends on October 3, about 1/3 of the bill, $117/307 billion, according to the Center for Media and Democracy, will have been repaid. The TARP money is just the tip of the iceberg, however. Non-TARP bailout of the Federal Reserve and housing sectors totals about $4.3 trillion. Of the total 4.6 trillion disbursed taxpayer dollars, almost $2 trillion is still unpaid. Keep these numbers in mind when you hear policy makers and their mouthpieces touting “mission accomplished” for TARP.
