Small But Rational Crowd Drinks Liberally in Little Rock

September 9th, 2010 livelightly No comments

A small group of Progressives talked strategy and underwent some alcohol therapy this evening at Kalil’s Pub and Grill in West Little Rock.  The group gets an A+ for leadership.   Hostess Laura Packard ensured that everyone was engaged in the lively discussion.  That’s not as easy as it sounds, and good hostesses are a rarity in this city, at least in liberal crowds.  The meetings are part of an international movement, Drinking Liberally.  Here in Little Rock, they are held the 2nd Thursday of every month, from 6-8pm at Kalil’s.  You can join the fun on Facebook or the web, but, of course, liberal drinking is best done in good company.

Kalil’s, it turns out, has more to recommend it than fellow liberals.  The beer list is long, with many excellent choices.  Waitstaff were efficient and personable and even joined the discussion a few times.   Next month, make sure you save the 2nd Thursday evening for Drinking Liberally.  You’ll be glad you did.

If Conway Threw a Party for Dick Morris

July 14th, 2010 livelightly No comments

Dick Morris is in the state, I’m told.

Maybe we can get the city of Conway to throw a party for him.   They could call it “Toe Suck Daze.”

(Apologies to out of state readers.  This is a purely inside Arkansas joke.  Google Conway, AR, and you’ll understand soon enough.)

Morris is touring for the corporate shill group Americans for Prosperity, along with that erstwhile Democratic Senate candidate, DC Morrison.

GOP Scores Another Win in Branding Wars

July 10th, 2010 livelightly No comments

A recent poll by Democracy Corps, reported at TPM, finds that 55% of likely voters believe that “socialist” describes President Obama as either “well” or “very well.”    Findings like this underscore the effectiveness of the GOP media machine.    Having hugely popular news networks devoted 24/7 to right-wing messaging works.    The answer would likely have been the same if the test word was “communist,” or even “fascist.”  After all, those terms get thrown around almost interchangeably by right-wing talk-show hosts, and “nazi” sometimes gets thrown in for good measure.

It would have been interesting had the pollsters asked for the definition of the word “socialist.”  I’m betting most of that 55% couldn’t accurately define what a socialist is.   If 1/4 of US citizens polled do not know the US fought Great Britain for independence, anything is possible, even likely.
