This blog is starting to look neglected. Cobwebs are gathering around pages that are the digital equivalent of yellowed. Mea culpa. Too many times over the past few weeks I have thought about posting, but couldn’t bring myself to pick up the laptop and begin. In a time when hate outsells love, fear trumps hope, and greed rules over generosity, who’s reading, anyway? Could it be possible that the vast majority of Americans believe everything will be just fine as long as no embryos get hurt, nobody has sex without the Biblical stamp of approval, and nobody gets anything, and I mean anything, he/she doesn’t “earn?” Is there even room for concepts like peace, love, humility, and simplicity, much less shared responsibility, in corporatist America?
Maybe not. But it’s time for me to put self pity aside, take up my laptop, and get the dust bunnies out of the blog. Be advised. I’m back, and I’ll be taking on the ideas logic left behind (That’s right, John Boozman. Your espousal of the “Fair tax” has not escaped my notice.) and celebrating the people and groups that get things right.
Someone forwarded me a message urging me to participate in a survey currently being run by NBC. The survey asks one question: “Do you believe the motto ‘in God we trust” should be removed from US currency?” The sender, who will remain anonymous, urged me to send the letter to “all Christians” I know so they could vote (presumbably “no”). At the bottom of the note was this message: “This is not sent for discussion. If you agree, forward it, if you don’t, delete it.” Well, I did neither. I went directly to the survey and voted “yes.” I think it’s high time to put religion and superstition out of office in this country.
Wherever you may personally stand on this issue, here’s your chance to let NBC know how you feel.
This guy is a pretty good stand-up comic, as well as an outspoken liberal.
According to a recent study by the Pew Institute, only 6% of scientists identify themselves as Republican. Only 9% would describe themselves as conservative. Perhaps that’s because of the consistent disregard for science that highlights the worldview of conservatives in America today. Case in point: global warming. Fully 94% of scientists believe that the earth is warming (84% of those believe warming is caused by human activity). Among the general public 85% believe global warming is a real phenomonen, but only 49% think it is human-driven. In contrast, 43% of Republicans think global warming is not caused by human activity.
It is a testament to the power of right-wing manipulation of public opinion that the American public is largely confused about the degree to which scientists agree on global warming. Only 56% of the public say that scientists agree on global warming as caused by humans. Remember, the actual consensus among scientists was 84%.
(note: I prefer the term “climate change” over global warming, because it is a broader term for what is happening worldwide where some areas will actually grow colder, but the Pew Institute used global warming in this survey.)
This website was hacked over the weekend, and I am attempting to get my back-up posts on-line again. I’ll get started with new posts again tomorrow. Keep lobbying.
